Know Your Copy Rights—What You Can Do

A 2007 Brochure Aimed at Faculty and Teaching Assistants

Among the topics covered in the brochure are: fair use, the advantage of linking to instead of copying works, and special provisions for displaying or performing works in classes. The brochure also includes a one-page chart that highlights 24 situations when various categories of works can be used.

For libraries that wish to customize the brochure, white space is available on page 3 (the bottom of the left column) where you might add the name of a local contact. Libraries are also free to use image-editing software to add their name and/or logo to the back cover of the brochure near the text that reads, "This brochure is brought to you by your institution's library...."

The brochure is available in various forms for free download as PDF files.

The size of the color version of the complete brochure exceeds the limits of most e-mail systems. To call a colleague’s attention to the brochure, consider providing a link rather than attaching a PDF. Should you need to e-mail a PDF of the color brochure, we recommend you use the “zipped” (compressed) version. Black-and-white alternatives are also offered below.

Printed Copies

ARL's supply of print copies of the brochure has been exhausted. Libraries are encouraged to use the PDF files listed above to print locally.

Ways to Use the Brochure

  • Distribute the brochure at copyright workshops.
  • Give it to your institution’s legal counsel.
  • Share it with your provost and vice-provosts.
  • Bring it to the attention of the distance education arm of the university—suggest they use it in workshops on how to create online courses or link to it from within their course management systems.
  • Use it in exhibits at information technology expos, orientation fairs, etc.
  • Suggest to your collection managers that they share it at the departmental faculty meetings they attend.
  • Give it to faculty library representatives.
  • Hand it out at new faculty events where library services are presented.
  • Send it to your copyright and/or intellectual property committees.
  • Offer copies at library service points (such as the reference, circulation, or reserves desks) or at your learning commons or digital media labs.
  • Reprint the one-page “What You Can Do” chart in campus publications read by faculty and teaching assistants.
