I don't want a lawyer to tell me what I cannot do; I hire them to tell me how to do what I want to do.

University legal counsel's primary function is to further their institution's mission of teaching, research, and outreach. They provide legal advice and counsel on a wide range of topics, including the application of copyright law to specific university activities. Not uncommonly their activity in this area can be described as preventive counseling, i.e., the provision of timely and effective legal advice before legal problems arise in order to prevent or minimize legal liability.
